Indian Head Cent: Spesifikasjoner, Detaljer og Generell informasjon
Bakgrunn og historie
Den indiske hodetpenny ble opprettet for å erstatte den flygende Eagle-centen fordi USAs Mint hadde problemer med å slå på Flying Eagle-centen jevnt. Under ledelse fra Mint-direktør James Ross Snowden, designet James B. Longacre erstatningen. Den omvendte designen ble den relativt den samme mens Longacre erstattet forsidedesignet med en allegorisk figur av Lady Liberty som hadde på seg en indisk hodeplagg.
Longacre brukte først denne allegoriske figurideen på 1854 en dollar gullbit. Den omvendte designen var svært lik den forrige Flying Eagle revers. I det første året (1859) hadde omvendt en laurbærkranse rundt ordene ONE CENT. I 1860 endret Longacre kransen på baksiden til en krans av eikeblader med Union Shield på toppen av kransen.
På grunn av den stigende kostnaden av råmaterialer under borgerkrigen ble sammensetningen skiftet midt i 1864 fra en blanding av kobber og nikkel til en bronselegering. I tillegg godkjente kongressen en reduksjon i vekten fra 4,67 gram til 3,11 gram. Produksjonen av disse centene fortsatte gjennom 1909 da statskassen avviste den med Lincoln-centen som minnet 100-årsdagen for hans fødsel.
Indian Head penny verdier og priser har vært historisk flatt når korrigert for inflasjon.
